“Looking After Yourself As A Foster Carer” Training Day

Foster carers in the West Midlands enjoyed an excellent training event with Child Clinical Psychologist Dr Saty Bhogal on Monday 17th July which explored these very important areas for foster carers:

  • Foster carers do a fantastic job, but it can also be a challenging and complex role with annual reviews, ongoing professional development, liaison with social workers and others who work with children, and record keeping.
  • Looking after a fostered child is a complex and challenging role. Every child has their own particular needs and the task of a foster carer is to meet those needs and then help that child to aim high and to achieve their full potential.
  • The impact on a carer’s own well-being of sharing their lives with very angry, depressed – or even detached – young people, means we have to ensure we support carers and their emotional health in order to be able to meet the needs of the children they are looking after.
  • How to identify your stress factors, coping mechanisms and when to seek support.

All the carers were given a little “pamper gift set” to take home after the course.

Jess (Regional Manager ) was really pleased to receive the following feedback from Angelia , a carer who attended the course:
“Hi Jess ,
Just to say thank you for your kind gesture that you gave us on Monday it was lovely , the gift was beautiful, and Jess the training was fantastic, really enjoyed it ,thank you for such a lovely time.”

Our agency is proud of it’s commitment to ongoing training and development of foster carers and staff, this being just one example of the regular training on offer for our registered foster carers.
