Fostering Assessment

The fostering assessment process is not just form filling, but an opportunity to find out more about your ideas of parenting, caring, and what elements of support you may have already.

The assessment will lay the foundation for you becoming a professional carer.

The major elements of the assessment process involve home and individual visits, health, police, and reference checks, together with attendance at the “Skills to Foster” preparation course.

Once the assessment has been completed to the satisfaction of you and your assessing social worker we will have gained a valuable insight into three main competences:

• Caring for children
• Working with birth families
• Working as part of a team in the area of Child Care Knowledge and Skills

Skills to Foster

The Skills to Foster course is usually run over three days and can be attended in person or virtually by video link.

Foster Panel

The final stage of your journey to becoming a foster carer is the Foster Panel, where a team of independent professionals with various backgrounds and skills will review your assessment.

The foster panel will make a recommendation to us about your suitability to foster.

Child Care Knowledge and Skills

Regional Foster Families will continue to support you throughout your time as a carer and will be inviting you to various training courses, events and support groups which will enable you to develop new skills and improve on your technique whilst keeping you up to date with current legislation.
